Letter to the Editor: Dutton’s legacy

DEAR News Of The Area,

PETER Dutton blames “Hate Media” such as the ABC and The Guardian for contributing to his defeat in the election.

The fact is that most media in Australia favours the conservative side of politics.

The Murdoch-owned The Australian, Daily Telegraph and Herald Sun consistently favour the Coalition.

Dutton generously shared his views on Sky News Australia (partly Murdoch owned) while refusing interviews with questioning media until forced to during the election campaign.

Notably, he refused to address the National Press Club in contrast to most prominent politicians who are subject to scrutiny there.

Dutton, and his predecessor Scott Morrison, were strong Donald Trump supporters as well as his policies such as mass sackings of public servants.

Dislike of Dutton and Morrison was critical in losing previously safe Liberal seats in our capital cities.

Instead of trying to win back support in these seats with more liberal policies Dutton’s “dog whistles” to other electorates further lost support to the city-based “Teals”.

Peter Dutton”s departing political speech may have been “gracious” but his legacy is a massive problem for the Liberal Party trying to be more liberal!

Yours sincerely,
Peter SMITH,
Soldiers Point.
