Harbourside Port Stephens residents celebrate a month of milestones

JULY was a month of birthday celebrations at Harbourside Port Stephens, with two of its residents turning 100.

Marian McKell celebrated her 100th birthday on 18 July and fellow resident Helen Southall soon followed, reaching the milestone on 31 July.

“We’re honoured to be part of their journey and to celebrate this special moment together,” a spokesperson for Harbourside Port Stephens said.

Marian was born in Sydney and has explored the world, venturing to destinations such as Africa, South America and Europe.

Her advice to younger generations is to “follow your heart”.

She worked as a secretary to the organiser of the Commonwealth Games, a role that gave her a front-row seat to history in the making.

With three children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, family is at the heart of Marian’s life.

When asked her secret to longevity, she said “love and laughter.”

Helen also cherishes her family, having grown up as one of 12 children.

She was raised in a large home built by her father in Albury, and looks back fondly on her close bond with her siblings.

She met her husband Jack while working in the Woollen Mills near her family home.

She is now a proud grandmother to six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

“My greatest joy has been my family,” Helen said.

Each birthday was celebrated in the Harbourside community with cake, flowers and balloons.
