MARINE Rescue NSW volunteers from the Hunter and Port Stephens regions took part in the Australasian Rescue Organisation’s Australasian Rescue Boat Challenge at Penrith Whitewater Stadium.
Port Stephens local Daryl Jurd, from Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage, was one of 14 Marine Rescue NSW volunteers and staff representing 10 units.
Seven competed in inflatable rescue boat teams, with another seven supporting the contingent and completing professional development activities.
The challenge gave volunteers the chance to refine their skills under pressure.
“Our volunteers can be deployed statewide to support communities during severe weather emergencies,” Marine Rescue NSW Capability Manager Dave Bowing said.
“Crews were assessed on their performance, effectiveness and attention to detail across a range of rescue tasks, including caring for simulated patients and navigating complex water conditions.
“It’s part of our ongoing commitment to developing their skills and capability.”
Mr Jurd is among 3500 trained Marine Rescue NSW volunteers who support communities through search and rescue operations, marine radio monitoring and boating safety education.
