Hunter Horse Haven offers second chances

FOR horses that have experienced neglect, abandonment, or uncertain futures, Hunter Horse Haven Inc. offers a new beginning.

Based at Anna Bay, Hunter Horse Haven Rescue is a registered not-for-profit charity dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, retraining and rehoming unwanted horses of all breeds.

Horses arrive at the sanctuary from a range of circumstances, including reported cases of neglect, abandonment, or situations where an animal may otherwise be destined for slaughter.

Regardless of their history, volunteers work alongside equine professionals to allow each horse to recover and eventually find a suitable new home.

Central to the charity’s work is a dedicated team of volunteers who contribute their time in all weather to clean stalls, prepare feed, provide ongoing care and assist with the rehabilitation of the horses.

The organisation describes an important part of that care as providing ‘buckets of love’.

For some horses, the commitment extends to around-the-clock care.

The late ex-racehorse Jet, for example, received continuous support during his final days, ensuring he was treated with dignity and kindness when recovery was no longer possible.

Rehabilitation can be a lengthy process, addressing both physical conditions such as emaciation, illness and injury, as well as the emotional effects of previous trauma.

Each horse is assessed individually and given the time required to regain its health and confidence.

For some, the process may take months, while others can require years before they are ready to be placed in a new “fur-ever” home.

The work of Hunter Horse Haven also extends into the wider community.

Along with addressing animal welfare concerns through rescue and contractual rehoming, the charity provides opportunities for volunteers and community members to develop skills and experience the benefits of interacting with horses.

This can include people living with disabilities or experiencing mental health challenges, for whom interaction with animals can provide a valuable and rewarding experience.

Operating without paid staff, Hunter Horse Haven relies on donations, sponsorships and volunteers to continue its work.

Ongoing expenses include feed, veterinary treatment, farrier and dental care, along with the costs of maintaining the property. Severe weather events, including recent flooding, can place further pressure on the organisation and its resources.

The charity says 100 per cent of money raised goes towards meeting these costs.

Each successful adoption not only provides a horse with a new home but also creates space for another animal requiring assistance.

The organisation is encouraging community members to support its work through donations, horse or property sponsorships, or by volunteering their time.

As Mahatma Gandhi famously stated, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
