COLOURFUL hats, plenty of laughter and community support helped the Medowie Lions’ Biggest High Tea raise $3100 for childhood cancer research.
Around 56 people attended the event on Saturday 19 September, with money raised going to the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.
Guests enjoyed a fashion parade, raffles, a silent auction and a Best Hat competition, along with a selection of sweet and savoury treats.
Medowie Lions vice president Patrick Byron spoke about the importance of supporting research into childhood cancer.
“Most of us have probably been touched by cancer in one way, shape or form,” he said.
“We know what adults go through, let alone what children go through.”
Medowie Lions chair, John Tunbridge said the event gave people the chance to meet, talk and enjoy each other’s company while supporting an important cause.
“We all talked to everyone this time, so it was awesome,” he said.
Lions District 201N3 Governor Marcia Allman thanked those who attended to support the fundraiser.
“What a wonderful day it has been, with everybody getting together for such a worthy cause,” she said.
“There are so many ways we can raise funds to support our foundation, so thank you so much for coming today.”
There were many colourful and creative hats on display, making Marcia’s job of choosing the winner a difficult one.
The fashion parade added to the fun, with local models showing a range of clothing and accessories from a Raymond Terrace store.
The silent auction also attracted plenty of interest, with prizes including family passes to Taronga Zoo, the Australian Reptile Park and Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters, a Moonshadow cruise, and a voucher for The Deck at Soldiers Point.
Medowie Lions members and volunteers arrived early to prepare the room, food and activities, while local businesses and attractions supported the day by donating prizes.
The $3100 raised will help fund research aimed at improving treatments and outcomes for children living with cancer.
The Medowie Lions’ next fundraiser will be a craft stall in Medowie on 9 and 10 October.
