CLUB legend Michael Squires will coach the Nelson Bay Gropers in next year’s Hunter Suburban Men’s Rugby first grade competition.
The well-credentialled Squires takes over the reins from veteran Kiwi player-coach Zion Takarua, who has stepped down after one season at the helm.
Squires, a Nelson Bay native who achieved coaching success with the Tamworth Pirates club in the Central North Rugby Zone series, returned to Port Stephens this season to mentor the Gropers’ 2025 women’s squad.
He is the uncle of 18-year-old Boat Harbour golf sensation Amy Squires, who has commenced a four-year golfing scholarship at Texas Tech University in the United States.
Takarua, an experienced power running prop and club personality, guided the Gropers to this year’s President’s Cup finals series but has relinquished the top grade coaching role to focus on playing next season.
He will be replaced by the astute Squires, who has also coached Central North Zone representative teams at the NSW Country Rugby Championships over the years.
Nelson Bay Rugby Club have also announced their officebearers for the 2026 season.
Gropers’ stalwart Gavin Rocher has been re-elected Club President with Brad McLeay and Lucas McCleer to serve as Vice Presidents.
Stewart Fielder was elected Club Secretary along with treasurer Rachel Rocher and Registrars Marilyn Buchanan and the tireless Greg Spake.
Leigh Byfield was appointed Women’s Co-ordinator with stalwart Wayne Bron and first grade forwards Sam Rocher and Nathan McLeay to back up as committee members.
