NELSON Bay Gropers are busily preparing for a decent crack at this year’s Hunter Suburban Rugby Mens premiership title.

One of the initial tasks for newly-appointed coach Michael Squires is locking up the services of team workhorse Adam Edwards for the 2026 season.

The 37 year old veteran Kiwi lock was a vital cog in the club’s Presidents Cup first grade finals charge last season, turning in non-stop performances throughout an injury-riddled campaign.

Evergreen Edwards relished his role as team leader and produced inspirational performances to guide the Gropers into the 2025 mens finals series.

In recognition of his wholehearted efforts, the legendary lock received the club’s Players’ Player Trophy at the end-of-season presentation night – a just reward for the Gropers’ hard man.

The former Hunter Wildfires representative skipper has proved a mainstay for the Nelson Bay club at number eight over the years, adding vast experience to a youthful forward pack.

Coach Squires would love to keep the services of the tough tackling lock in 2026.

The teak-tough Edwards is one of Hunter Suburban Rugby’s most experienced top grade forwards who can still mix it with the best on a week-to-week basis.
