Medowie club netballers primed for another successful season

MEDOWIE Netball Club continues to prosper under the motto of “education and fun on the netball court”.

The long-established local sporting organisation is gearing up for another bumper season in both the Port Stephens and Maitland Netball Association competitions that commence on 2 May.

With an influx of teams and new players, the proud Medowie club again shapes as a force to be reckoned with on and off the court in the junior, intermediate, cadets and senior divisions in the Hunter region.

Long-serving president Kerry Whitty anticipates another eventful campaign from her charges in 2026.

“We will field 25 teams this season which is an increase of four from last year and have registered some exciting new talent which is a major boost for the club,” the evergreen stalwart told News Of The Area.

“Thirteen of those teams will compete in the Port Stephens Netball Association competition while the other twelve will show their wares in the Maitland Netball series,” Kerry exclaimed.

“We are a proudly inclusive community-based netball club and welcome both boys and girls and men and women of all fitness and ability levels,” she added.

Kerry is delighted with registration numbers from the Net Set Go program (5yrs to 10yrs) through to juniors and seniors that are keen to represent the club across the region.

“It is great to see Medowie Netball club growing again,” quipped the prominent club leader.

“We have a fabulous committee who are dedicated and work tirelessly behind the scenes and highly skilled coaches who are developing our players to the next level,” Kerry revealed.

One of those coaches is Kerry’s daughter Taylah Whitty – a State Junior championship-winning mentor who also guides the fortunes of the Nelson Bay Under 12 Girls representative squad .

Taylah juggles her coaching commitments while serving as the Medowie club’s vice president and is supported by her dear friend Tahlia Brien, who doubles as club treasurer and the Nelson Bay representative squad manager.

In a massive achievement, the Medowie club will have a total of 40 representative players in the Port Stephens, Maitland, Nelson Bay, Charlestown and Dungog squads competing at this year’s State Junior and Senior Netball Championships in Sydney.

Kerry said a telling factor with Medowie recruits was that the players wanted to improve in their netball and “have fun while doing it”.

Other key executive members include hard working secretary Taryn Hughes, Coaching Convenor Shannon Bohan, Umpires Convenor Jenny Whitty, publicity officer Jacki Adams and Juniors co-ordinators Beth Gordon, Jacki Adams and Kylie Barrett.

Talented siblings Shannon and Mackenzie Bohan are valued members of the Medowie Kaos A2 squad and will line up for a third successive season with the Hunter Metro League team that will compete in Sydney each Monday.

The Medowie club launched its 2026 campaign with a successful intra-club round robin series recently at their home courts at Ferodale Sports Complex.
