BOAT Harbour Recreation Club has officially opened four purpose-built pickleball courts, marking a major milestone for one of Australia’s fastest-growing sports.
More than 60 community members, volunteers, local councillors and special guests gathered on Saturday, 27 June, to celebrate the transformation of an ageing tennis court into a modern facility for players of all ages and abilities.
Club President Stephen Hopkin said the project began with a simple question in March 2023: would a pickleball even bounce on the club’s worn-out Tennis Court 2?
“It bounced occasionally,” he joked, recalling the ageing synthetic surface that inspired the redevelopment.
The club hosted its first pickleball session in November 2024 with just four players.
Within weeks, participation had surged, highlighting strong local demand for the sport.
“The resurfacing of the court and upgrade to a hard surface has extended the playability for decades to come,” said Boat Harbour Recreation Club Fiona Brown.
“Comments from players since the courts have opened have been fantastic, with many saying they feel safer playing on the hard surface with their skills having already improved.
“It has also doubled the amount of players on the court at any one time, making accessibility to pickleball facilities greater for locals.”
The project was driven by a strong community effort, with volunteers, Port Stephens Council, government representatives and contractors working together to bring the new courts to life.
Before construction began, volunteers removed more than 600 square metres of ageing synthetic surface and four tonnes of sand, with all materials recycled rather than sent to landfill.
Construction by SportsZone commenced at the end of May, with the final coat of paint applied just days before the official opening.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mr Hopkin thanked Port Stephens Council, Mayor Leah Anderson, Councillor Nathan Errington, Kate Washington MP, Meryl Swanson MP, SportsZone, and the many volunteers and supporters whose contributions made the project possible.
Established in 1967, Boat Harbour Recreation Club has been a cornerstone of local sport and recreation for almost six decades.
The new pickleball courts ensure that legacy will continue for years to come.
As soon as the ribbon was cut, players wasted no time taking to the pristine new courts, capping off a celebration that showcased the power of community collaboration and shared vision.
