Hundreds of entries for art competition celebrating migratory shorebirds

WINNING artworks of the Wings over Wetlands competition, which celebrates the annual arrival of migratory shorebirds in local wetlands, will be showcased at Roy Wood Reserve on Sunday, 13 September, from 11 am to 2 pm.

Wings over Wetlands is the result of a partnership between Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee, Port Stephens Council and the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre, as well as Newcastle Council and the Japanese city Kushiro, Port Stephens’ sister city, where some of the birds migrate from.

“Every year shorebirds that breed in Japan, the Arctic Circle and Alaska fly to the Hunter and Port Stephens wetlands during the northern winter,” deputy Chair of the Port Stephens Committee, Elaine Fereday said.

Sponsored by Ingenia Lifestyle, the competition asked participants of all skill levels to submit art and photographs depicting the migratory birds.

More than 100 submissions were received.

Along with cash prizes totaling $6650, the winners’ artwork will be featured on banners flown annually in Nelson Bay.

“All the entries are wonderful,” Ms Fereday said.

“Some beautifully depict the connection with Japan, while others convey the importance of protecting migratory shorebirds.

“There’s also some  striking images of birds flying non-stop across the vast ocean.”

The National Parks and Wildlife Service will also take part in the presentation, along with the Hunter Bird Observers Club, which will demonstrate bird spotting on the shoreline.

Port Stephens EcoNetwork and the Mambo-Wanda Wetlands Conservation Group have been involved in the competition, highlighting the importance of healthy wetlands for avian migration.

“To make these annual return flights, the birds need healthy wetland habitats both here and in their breeding grounds to rest, feed and gain strength for their journeys,” Ms Fereday added.
