KNOW a local identity whose work deserves recognition? Nominate them for a Port Stephens Annual Award.
It might be someone who has spent years volunteering or helping young people, or a neighbour who keeps turning up when the community needs a hand.
Mayor Leah Anderson said the awards depend on residents taking the time to nominate people they know.
“Port Stephens is full of people who give their time, share their skills and step up to help others,” she said.
“These awards celebrate that contribution and say thank you.”
There are seven categories:
Citizen of the Year recognises a significant contribution, particularly over the past 12 months.
Young Citizen of the Year is for someone aged 25 or younger.
The Port Stephens Medal goes to a person, group or organisation for distinguished service.
Sportsperson of the Year is not limited to athletes. Coaches, officials and administrators can also be nominated. Cultural Endeavour covers work in the arts, heritage and creativity.
The Environmental Award recognises work to care for the environment.
Freeman of Port Stephens is reserved for exceptional service over many years and is not necessarily awarded annually.
Last year’s recipients show the range of work the awards can recognise.
Raymond Terrace volunteer Andrew Barron received the Citizen of the Year award for his involvement in disaster response, sport and community work.
Jason Russell, founder of Koori Colours Art Gallery, received the Cultural Endeavour Award for his work sharing Aboriginal art and culture.
Environmental Award recipient Sue Johnson was recognised for her Landcare work and involvement with the Port Stephens Koala Hospital.
“The nominations come from our community, which makes these awards particularly meaningful,” Mayor Anderson said.
A panel assesses nominations on the information supplied, so it is worth explaining what the person has done and the difference their work has made. The panel also decides which award category best fits each nomination.
Applications close on Tuesday, 3 November and will be presented on Australia Day, 26 January 2027.
Nomination forms and guidelines are available at pscouncil.info/annual-awards.
