Irrawang students tackle first HSC exam with plans for the future

All smiles after completing their first HSC exam are Irrawang High School students Liam Bennet and Emalynne Hunter-Hahn.

A UNIVERSITY acceptance and a career in the Australian Defence Force are on the horizon for two Irrawang High School students who have just begun their HSC exams.

But on Tuesday 13 October, Liam Bennet and Emalynne Hunter-Hahn were focused on getting their first English paper out of the way.

Speaking with News Of The Area after the exam, the pair talked about how they had prepared, the challenges they faced and what they were looking forward to once their exams were finished.

For Emalynne, one of the hardest parts was dealing with the pressure leading up to the exams.

“Pressure of the whole experience and just realising it is a big deal,” she said.

Studying alongside her classmates had helped her prepare.

“General revision, like a lot of class activities,” Emalynne said.

“I liked working as a group rather than individual study.”

Liam also made use of the time available at school to revise.

“We just studied at school,” he said.

Teachers had provided extra support during the school holidays, running workshops across 12 subjects, as well as Standard 1, Standard 2 and Advanced Mathematics.

The workshops gave students a chance to ask questions and revise their work before the exams began.

Liam has already been accepted into the University of Newcastle, while Emalynne hopes to join the Australian Defence Force after finishing school.

Although there are still exams ahead, both are looking forward to having some free time and getting to the beach.

Asked what advice they would give next year’s Year 12 students, the message was to enjoy the year, keep trying and prepare for what lies ahead.

There was little time to relax after their first paper, with their next English exam scheduled for the following morning.
