RECENT rain has been welcomed by Nelson Bay Civic Pride group volunteer gardeners, who have nurtured gardens in the Nelson Bay CBD for the past seven years.
They say the recent hot dry summer and autumn has been particularly challenging.
The group kicked off after a large community working bee in May 2018 organised by the then Tomaree Business Chamber and Port Stephens Council.
Volunteers have since planted, weeded and watered the gardens in Magnus, Stockton and Donald Streets, however help is sometimes hard to come by.
“Our volunteer numbers are dwindling and we need lots of new recruits to continue our work,” said Margaret Wilkinson on behalf of the volunteers.
“It’s not hard and you don’t need gardening experience to help out.
“One of the rewards of the work is the lovely positive feedback our volunteers receive while on the job from passers by – whether they be local or visitors. They love the colour.”
The gardens feature a wide variety of different plants with the main criteria being colour, variety, being shade loving and toughness.
A special working bee will be held on Thursday 15 May at 8.30am, at which new volunteers are invited to join in.
Contact Margaret on 0412199221 for further details or just turn up in your working gear to the initial meeting point near the seats at the corner of Stockton and Donald Streets across from Woolworths.
Tools and high viz vests are provided.
