Residents invited to help form a Medowie Landcare group

MEDOWIE’S bushland is part of what makes it a special place to live.

Now, the woman behind a proposed local Landcare group is calling on residents to help care for it.

Organiser Dee Murdoch hopes to bring together residents who want to protect the natural areas that surround them.

An initial meeting is planned for next Sunday, 18 October at 3pm to gauge interest and discuss forming a group under the Hunter Region Landcare Network.

“With the ever-increasing growth of the suburb there’s a need to protect and enhance its existing areas,” Ms Murdoch said.

“The meeting will give residents a chance to share ideas and help decide where the group’s efforts could make a difference.”

Weed control and rubbish dumping are among the first issues a new group could tackle.

One area being considered is the road reserve along the Medowie Road cycleways, with any work there subject to discussions with Hunter Water and Port Stephens Council.

Planting native vegetation and restoring habitat for local wildlife, such as koalas and yellow-tailed black cockatoos, would also be on its agenda.

Working bees, community events and opportunities to learn from each other could all become part of the group’s activities.

For residents who care about the bushland they pass on a walk or bike ride, the meeting offers a chance to have a say in how it’s cared for.

The group is still taking shape, and Ms Murdoch is keen to hear from more locals who would like to get involved.

Whether the interest is in native plants, wildlife or helping address weeds and dumped rubbish, residents can bring their ideas to the discussion.

To register interest or learn more about the aims and location of the meeting, call or text Dee Murdoch on 0408 489 689.
