TOMAREE Prostate Cancer Support Group and Nelson Bay Cancer Patient Transport Group recently came together for their combined 2025 Annual General Meeting, held at Soldiers Point Bowling Club.
The two community groups, established in 2012 and 2014 respectively, work closely to support local residents affected by cancer.
Driver Co-ordinator John Every, who has held the role since the transport group was formed, presented statistics covering the period from January 2014.
“321 patients have been transported to Newcastle and other destinations,” he said.
Over this time a total of 148 volunteer drivers have contributed, completing 6,158 trips and covering 686,400 kilometres.
Seven long-serving drivers have collectively driven 47,000 kilometres since the group’s inception.
The groups expressed their appreciation to their volunteers and community.
“Many thanks go to the volunteer drivers and the generous support from the local community, patients and their families,” a spokesperson for the groups said.
The spokesperson informed News Of The Area that community support ensures the transport service can continue for those who need it.
Following the formal proceedings, Group President Neville Stanfield hosted a thank you function to acknowledge the volunteer drivers who make the Cancer Patient Transport Group’s work possible.
The service provides transport for patients and their families who need to travel to medical appointments, easing practical and emotional pressures during treatment.
For the thirteenth consecutive year, the outgoing committee was re-elected unopposed, with John Stanbury welcomed as a new member.
They note that new committee members and volunteer drivers are always welcome.
