PORT Stephens Power senior women’s AFL team had plenty of motivation when they laced up their boots for action at Medowie’s Ferodale Oval last weekend.
Tim Drough’s rejuvenated charges celebrated Joey’s Round – in honour of Joseph Potter and all babies born sleeping – by raising awareness and support for Bears of Hope Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support.
The Power women had reason to smile after chalking up back-to-back victories over Terrigal Avoca Panthers in the Hunter Central Coast Black Diamond Senior Women’s Plate competition.
In a strong wet weather performance, the talented Port Stephens combination dominated from the outset to record an impressive 25-11 win.
Star midfielders Jenny Rojas, Maz Masiero and Molly Goudie led the way for the well-drilled Power team with support from Emma Chester, Jayde Everill and Abigail Carlos.
Port Stephens booted three early goals to lead 18-1 at the first break and were restricted to two behinds as they went to the half-time interval with a 20-1 advantage.
Hampered by the slippery conditions, the Power could only post five behinds in the final two quarters but defended stoutly to only concede one goal for the entire match.
There was no joy for the Port Stephens men’s team, which was humbled 91-28 by the second-placed Singleton Roosters in the Senior Men’s Plate series.
It was another courageous effort by the injury-riddled Power side, which refused to budge against the more-experienced Singleton outfit.
Scott Nunn (2), Alex Brady and Seth Fowler booted goals for the Port Stephens side, which continues to turn in brave displays against the competition’s big guns.
None tried harder for the young Power outfit than Jay Jeffery, Jamie Bowens, Alec Steinicke, Adam Fiene, Ben Frith and Ethan Wood.
