CORLETTE’S Tyler McInnes has played a match-winning role for premiers Stockton & Northern Districts in the Newcastle District Cricket Rippit first grade competition.
In an encouraging performance that impressed keen judges, the teenage leg-spinner bagged three wickets in the Seagulls’ comprehensive one day victory over University of Newcastle at Lynn Oval last weekend.
The Newcastle under-19 Colts representative snared the figures of 3-32 in a tidy eight-over spell to spearhead the Stockton X1 to a third win after four rounds.
Salamander Bay pace ace Ed Williams grabbed 2-10 from 33 deliveries as the Seagulls dismissed the Students for 138 to zoom into third spot on the ladder with 19 points – three behind competition leaders Charlestown (22 points) and second-placed Toronto Workers (22).
McInnes was at his wily best, removing University skipper Varunesh Sharma (25), vice captain Kashish Panseja (49) and number six Rhys Tyrrell for a first ball duck as the Seagulls gained control.
Stockton skipper Nick Foster won the toss and elected to bat first with the home side posting 6-236 off their 50 overs.
Half centuries by Adrian Chad (61 not out) and opener Ben Whitty (56) and an unbeaten 47 by Chad Mackey off 32 balls that included three sixes and four boundaries were a feature.
The capable Chad faced 76 balls and cracked two sixes and four boundaries with Whitty clouting seven boundaries in a polished 96-ball knock.
Striding to the crease at 6-139, all-rounder Mackey helped turn the match after combining with Chad for an unbroken seventh wicket partnership of 97.
Merewether Lions upset leaders Charlestown at Townson Oval to register the team’s second win of the season.
The Seagulls face struggling Wests this Saturday in a one-day fixture at Harker Oval.
