Brian Lawrence Memorial caps triathlon season with tribute to beloved athlete and volunteer

THE Maitland Triathlon Club (MTC) brought its season to a heartfelt close on Sunday, 12 April, hosting the Brian Lawrence Memorial Handicap.

The event at Louth Park in Maitland served as both the club’s final race of the season and a tribute to beloved Life Member Brian Lawrence, a long-time competitor and club volunteer.

The day celebrated Brian’s life, character, and lasting impact on the club and wider triathlon community.

In support of the event, the Tomaree Triathlon Club cancelled their own season finale out of respect for Brian’s memory.

The Maitland Triathlon Club, in a post to social media, said Brian was “more than a competitor. He was a mate”.

“For many years, he was always the first one there to set up and often the last to leave, giving his time selflessly to make every event the best it could be,” the club stated.

“Brian was loved and respected by so many.

“Whether it was seeing him flying around Hell of the West on his iconic bright green Trek Equinox, or proudly rocking his MTC budgie smugglers, he created memories that will live on in our club forever.”

The memorial handicap event is expected to become an ongoing fixture on the club calendar, honouring Brian’s legacy for years to come.

This year’s competitors were met with a chilly, yet sunny morning, as the kids/junior events kicked off first.

The young athletes showed determination and resilience in the cold conditions after leaving the pool and transitioning to their bike ride.

As the day warmed, so did the atmosphere, with strong participation across all races.
