FINGAL Bay pickleball master Tony Mayers has enhanced his playing reputation in the popular sport.
The sole Port Stephens representative at the recent Victoria Open Pickleball Championships in Somerville and Frankston teamed up with Ian Kirkham from Burwood East to claim a bronze medal in the 60yrs plus Men’s Doubles with a skill level of 3.0 to 3.49.
The durable Mayers impressed keen judges with his courtcraft and competitive edge in a strong field.
Wangaratta’s Noel Boyd and Rocky Lawson (Hastings) won gold with New South Welshman Alan Freshwater (Alfords Point) and Gary Freshwater (Palm Beach Queensland) collecting the silver medal after a hard fought final.
Mayers was one of six Port Stephens club players that later ventured to Canberra for the Big Chill tournament where he figured in medal contention.
Fresh from his doubles triumph with John Grace at this year’s Australian Masters championships on the Gold Coast, the pair were pipped for a medal in the bronze play-off in the 60yrs plus Men’s Doubles event.
