From the Mayor’s desk: Newcastle Airport takes off

NEWCASTLE Airport is soaring to new heights – and that’s great news for the people of Port Stephens.

Last week, I was honoured to help announce direct international flights to Bali starting in August 2024.

Just the week before, we also celebrated the launch of direct flights to Perth.

These announcements mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Port Stephens and the greater Hunter region.

We are now more connected to the world than ever before, and with that connection comes new opportunities – for tourism, business, investment, and jobs.

Bali is a favourite holiday destination for many Australians – a place of sun, surf, culture, and relaxation that’s now just one direct flight away from Port Stephens.

But the new direct service to Perth opens up an entirely different world of opportunity.

It provides a vital connection to Europe and the UK, making long-haul travel easier for both business and leisure.

It also strengthens ties with Western Australia’s booming mining and resources sectors, opening new trade, investment, and employment pathways for industries across Port Stephens and the Hunter region.

These exciting developments follow the completion of the airport’s new international terminal – a world-class facility right on our doorstep.

The terminal features streamlined customs and immigration, upgraded retail and dining options, and a modern, spacious experience for travellers.

It’s a gateway that reflects the ambition, quality, and growth of our region.

But Newcastle Airport is more than just a place to catch a flight – it’s a key economic engine for Port Stephens. From tourism and trade to defence and advanced manufacturing, the airport supports thousands of jobs and connects our industries to national and global markets.

The surrounding economic hubs of Williamtown and Tomago depend on a strong, accessible airport to stay competitive and attract new investment.

For our visitor economy, this is a game-changer.

Direct international flights will bring more travellers to our region, supporting local accommodation, hospitality, and tourism experiences – and helping more people discover the natural beauty and lifestyle that makes Port Stephens so special.

Port Stephens Council is proud to be a joint shareholder of Newcastle Airport and delivering the airport our region deserves. We look forward to seeing even more exciting announcements in the near future.
