STEPHANIE Vasic and Melicity Dorin of Medowie Little Athletics have returned from the recent Region 2 championships in Maitland with a bagful of medals.
Hard work is reaping plenty of dividends for the promising pair in the track and field sphere.
They are the pride of the club after collecting a total of eight medals in their respective age divisions.
Sixteen-year-old sprint sensation Stephanie was in record-breaking form, clinching two gold medals plus a silver and bronze in the Girls 16yrs category.
The talented Vasic won gold in the 200m final with an impressive time of 29.03 sec from Maitland’s Peyton Redgrove (29.30 sec) and Merriwa’s Grace Collits (30.51 sec).
She claimed her second gold medal by winning the long jump with a leap of 4.36m – edging out Cessnock’s Tayla Brooks (4.28m).
In picking up a bronze medal in the Girls 16yrs 100m sprint, Stephanie posted a sizzling time of 14.01 sec to smash her own previous record (14.58 sec), set at the Port-Hunter Zone Athletics Championships at Mallabula Sports Complex last November.
Aberdeen’s Ruby Brochtrup won gold in a sizzling time of 12.90 sec from Singleton’s Luca Santry (12.98 sec).
Stephanie also earned a silver medal in the High Jump with a score of 1.30m – just behind gold medallist Kiani Morrison of the Terrigal/Wamberal club who posted 1.40m.
And she finished eighth in shot put with a toss of 7.91m. Cardiff’s Tahlia Smith won the event with a score of 10.53m.
Melicity, 18, proved herself one of the Hunter region’s versatile athletes after annexing gold, silver and two bronze medals in her age group.
She collected gold in the Under 20 Girls 100m with a time of 15.61 sec before picking up silver in the 100m Hurdles behind star Raymond Terrace athlete Dixie Conlon.
Melicity clocked 23.74sec to finish runner-up to Conlon, who won the event with a cracking time of 16.07 seconds.
It was part of a gold medal-winning trifecta for Australian junior representative Conlon, who also clinched the Under 20 long jump (5.29m) and triple jump (10.75m) titles.
Melicity capped a successful Region 2 meet by also snaring bronze medals in the long jump (3.15m) and triple jump (7.18m) events.
Medowie Little Athletics secretary Eileen Christie told News Of The Area that the club was “extremely proud” of the performances of both Vasic and Dorin.
“They are long standing competitors and two of the hardest working athletes at our Medowie club and fine role models for our up and coming juniors,” revealed Elaine.
“Stephanie continues to be a leader at training, is one of the most coachable athletes, and her attitude and desire to be greater is inspiring.
“Melicity is just as determined and we are lucky to have them both at our club.”
