Hume assesses future use of Bareena Street site after Council sale

A BLOCK of land in Raymond Terrace could become home to an affordable housing development, following its sale by Port Stephens Council to Hume Housing.

The 1765-square-metre site at 9A Bareena Street was previously a road reserve, which Council closed before selling the land.

While the land was sold for affordable housing, Hume Housing is still working out what type of development would best suit the site and the local community.

“At this stage, no decision has been made about the specific future use of the 9A Bareena Street site,” Laura Pollard, Hume Housing’s Chief Customer Officer, told News Of The Area.

“Hume is undertaking an assessment to better understand the needs of the local community and determine what type of project would provide the greatest benefit, while also being appropriate for the site.”

This means residents will have to wait a little longer to find out how many homes could be built, who would qualify to live there, and when construction might begin.

Ms Pollard said Hume would also look at possible philanthropic funding to support the project.

Raymond Terrace was well suited to affordable housing because of its access to shops, services and public transport, according to a Port Stephens Council spokesperson.

Council confirmed the land was sold at market value, as determined by an independent valuer.

“The proceeds from the sale will be reinvested into roads across Port Stephens, helping fund essential local infrastructure,” the spokesperson said.

Council and Hume Housing have previously worked together on a 13-townhouse, affordable housing development in Phillip Street, Raymond Terrace.

The Bareena Street sale comes as the council seeks community feedback on its draft Affordable Housing Action Plan.

The plan examines ways to increase affordable housing across Port Stephens, including working with housing providers and seeking government funding.

Residents have until 5pm on Wednesday, 4 November to provide feedback.
