I WRITE in reply to Wayne Duesbury (‘Facts speak louder than a Google search’, NOTA, 4/9/26).
Judging by the figures presented by Mr Duesbury, he is touting the views of a particular, long-discredited geologist, whose first book is one of the two in my long life (the other was ‘Mein Kampf’), which I bought, read and threw away to be assured that nobody else would waste their time on it.
This geologist’s latest book was launched last year by the right-wing Institute of Public Affairs, funded by billionaire inheritress Gina Rinehart and the oil, coal and gas industries.
Again, it was comforting for those who cannot face human responsibility for global warming, and it is still erroneous (try Wikipedia and numerous sources for refutation).
Our exchange of letters puts me in mind of Kurt Vonnegut’s dialogue between two yeast cells discussing the possible
purposes of life as they ate sugar and suffocated in their own excrement.
Because of their limited intelligence, they never came close to guessing that they were making champagne.
Neither of our views will alter the tragic trajectory of current human-caused warming as we remain trapped in petty squabbling, so I for one will leave it there.
