Letter to the Editor: Offshore wind conspiracy theories

DEAR News Of The Area,

Justin Page is all into conspiracy theories at much the same level as some wind farm opponents.

I suggest he make time to view Sir David Attenborough’s film “Ocean”, where he will find that the ocean currently absorbs 30 percent of earth’s carbon emissions and can well do without any more unnecessary stressors.

Krill and the millions of creatures, tiny and large, which make up the diel vertical migration, which is the means by which the carbon is sequestered in the seabed, are sensitive to light and noise.
Hundreds of turbines covering thousands of square kilometres in multiple locations around the Australian coastline will seriously negatively impact these creatures.

Attenborough states: “Another encouraging discovery is that ocean plankton “removes almost a third of our carbon emissions, [which] could be our greatest ally in avoiding climate catastrophe”.

Australia, unlike most other countries, has adequate already-degraded terrestrial space, with ample wind, to develop all the renewable infrastructure we will ever need.

Wasting money on investigating whether or not to put trendy infrastructure in the Australian marine environment at twice the cost of terrestrial infrastructure and which will take twice as long to build is on a par with the stupidity of the Liberals’ nuclear proposal.

Regards,

Cherylle STONE,

Soldiers Point.
