A PRESCHOOL in Nelson Bay prepared for Father’s Day with a workshop bringing parents and children together in a hands-on woodworking experience.
At Karingal Preschool, Nelson Bay, it is a yearly tradition for the Port Stephens Community Woodworkers to transform the classroom into a busy laboratory, where the sound of one’s voice can barely be heard over the noise of children hammering away at wooden planks.
For this year’s event, the woodworkers pre-made kits for children to assemble toolboxes, using hammers, nails and glue under the supervision of the expert woodworkers.
“We’ve been doing this for many, many years,” said preschool director Jeanette Finn.
“It’s a tradition at Karingal preschool that we do an event where the children and the fathers can work together on a project and have some time together.
“I’ve been here for 26 years, and we’ve done it every year.”
Len Lollback, president of the Port Stephens Community Woodworkers, commented that some of the children got so excited that they refused to give back the hammers when it was someone else’s turn.
The event is, first and foremost, an occasion to create a chance for parents and children to spend quality time together, and one that many dads look forward to.
“We’ve done it for three years in a row,” said one of the participants.
“Today I’m here with my eldest son, and he always looks forward to it. We’ve made two birdhouses, and now we’ve made a toolbox.”
