Nelson Bay Grey Gropers produce vintage displays at Golden Oldies Rugby event

FEARLESS forward warrior Brett Moss stole the show when the Nelson Bay Grey Gropers hosted their 41st annual Golden Oldies Rugby Gala Day recently at Bill Strong Oval.

The 55-year-old tackling machine demonstrated his amazing durability, power and skill, to spearhead a vintage Grey Gropers lineup that was full of running on the day.

There was no stopping the rampaging number eight as he tackled himself to a standstill and inspired the Nelson Bay rugby veterans with his bone-jarring hits and diesel-powered charges into the rucks.

Keen judges at the ground had no hesitation in voting the evergreen Moss as Player of the Old Boys Tournament after witnessing his stand-out form throughout the event.

Just as impressive with barnstorming performances of the highest calibre, was 40-year-old Grey Groper Ryan Guntrip.

The super fit forward proved a cornerstone of the Grey Gropers attack with his powerful surges upfield and robust defence – much to the delight of loyal Nelson Bay rugby diehards at the ground.

Other teams that competed at the Over 35s Golden Oldies Gala Day were the Central Coast Seagulls, Avoca White Pointers, Raymond Terrace Uglies, Lake Macquarie Roos and the Terrigal Turtles All Abilities side.

Legendary Grey Gropers club president Ray Milton told News Of The Area that “rugby was the winner on the day” with many of the Old Boys “turning back the clock” and enjoying the catch-up with a hard fought game and refreshment or two in social surrounds.

The Golden Oldies circuit continues this Sunday 19 April when the Lake Macquarie Roos host a Gala Day at Walters Park at Speers Point.
