WITH spring under way, wildlife is on the move across Port Stephens and local rescuers are gearing up for one of their busiest times of year.
Animals travelling in search of mates, young animals coming into care, and wildlife injured on local roads are among the challenges rescuers face.
But when a resident comes across an injured kangaroo, a sick bird or marine animal, knowing what to do is rarely straightforward.
That’s something Cheryl Punch wants to change by bringing together local animal, wildlife and marine rescue services for an Animal, Wildlife, Marine Life Rescue Services Information Showcase at Soldiers Point Community Hall from 3.30 pm to 8.30 pm this Saturday, 12 September.
Its focus will be on helping residents understand who to call when an animal is in urgent need of help.
The idea came partly from her own experience of seeing wildlife killed or injured on roads, wondering how many people would know what to do if an animal was still alive or had vulnerable young nearby.
She believes people do want to help, but aren’t sure where to start.
“We need to be educated as to what to do for our animals, wildlife and marine life when they’re in need,” Ms Punch said.
“Time is of the essence when it comes to saving an injured animal.
“It becomes even more critical at this time of year, when rescue groups see an increase in injured adult animals and babies requiring care.”
Many of the groups rely on volunteers, fundraising and donated supplies, with some young animals needing around-the-clock care.
There are other concerns too, including bird flu. Someone coming across a sick bird needs to know how to respond.
Bringing rescue services together allows locals to learn directly from the people dealing with these situations regularly.
“Education builds confidence,” she said
“Knowing what to do when a situation arises is critical.”
WINC, Port Stephens Koala Hospital, ORRCA and Irukandji representatives are expected to attend.
Entry is by donation, with money raised going to the participating services.
Local musicians will also perform, with refreshments available during the evening.
