Port Stephens vocalists part of national-champion Waratah Girls Choir

SEVERAL girls and young women from Raymond Terrace and Medowie are members of the Waratah Girls Choir, which was recently awarded the prestigious National Choral Champions title at the National Choral Eisteddfod in Canberra.

Performing at Canberra Grammar School, the senior choir competed in three sections and placed first in each, earning the overall title of National Choral Champions.

The achievement was described by organisers as recognition of the choir’s dedication, preparation, and musical excellence.

It will boost the singers’ confidence as they prepare for the International Choral Eisteddfod in Wales in 2028.

Vice captain Abbey T, who has been part of the choir for almost 12 years, said the win was “really surreal and emotional”.

“All I could think about was how much work we’d put into these songs and how proud I was of all the girls standing beside me,” she said.

“Joining this incredibly special community has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Fellow chorister Fatima‑Rose, now in her second year, described the Canberra performance as “an incredible experience that I will never forget”.

“I would encourage local girls to join our choir for the sense of community and the faithful Christian environment it provides,” she said.

Founded in 1982, the choir provides not only music training for its Newcastle and Port Stephens members, but also develops their confidence, leadership, teamwork, and resilience, and helps build lifelong friendships.

The choir’s mission remains unchanged since its founding: to unite young people aged eight to 30 in the joy of singing and community engagement through performance.

Three of the Port Stephens juniors,  Millie, Josie, and Abbey, said the best part of choir life is “making new friends and improving your singing”.
