Raymond Terrace initiative earns national nod for helping families at Christmas

RAYMOND Terrace Men’s Shed has been recognised on the national stage, earning finalist honours in the Bright Spark Award category at the 2026 Australian Men’s Shed Association awards in Brisbane.

While the win ultimately went to a Queensland shed, the Raymond Terrace group’s inclusion highlights the quiet and powerful impact being made locally through practical, community-driven ideas.

The Shed was acknowledged for its innovative Christmas pop-up shop, a grassroots initiative that combined craftsmanship with community care.

Members created a range of handmade wooden toys and items, which were then sold to the public at affordable prices in the lead-up to Christmas.

The shed’s sustainability also comes down to self-sufficiency.

Members slab their own timber, sourced from local tree loppers, using species like camphor laurel and cedar.

Materials costs are low, waste is minimal, and the end products are solid, sustainable, and built with pride.

The project had a dual purpose, raising funds for local charities while also easing financial pressure on families during one of the most expensive times of the year.

For many in the community, the pop-up provided access to meaningful, quality gifts that carried a personal touch, while also supporting a cycle of giving that stayed within the region.

Santa’s workshop literally became a shopfront run by wood turning, carving and whittling elves.

Beyond the awards, the initiative reflects what Men’s Sheds do best, creating connection, purpose and contribution.

Across Australia, more than 1,300 Men’s Sheds operate as spaces where skills are shared and social isolation is reduced.
