A RECENT three‑vehicle crash on Nelson Bay Road has renewed concerns about safety along one of Port Stephens’ busiest and most heavily used corridors.
Emergency services were called to the road after reports that a tabletop truck, a car and a ute had collided. Fire and Rescue NSW crews worked to free the 26‑year‑old truck driver before he was treated by paramedics and taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.
The incident comes amid growing scrutiny of Nelson Bay Road’s crash history. Preliminary Transport for NSW data shows two fatal crashes on this stretch of road so far in 2026, compared with none in 2025.
Between 2020 and 2024, 115 crashes were recorded between Taylor and Tallean roads, resulting in 125 casualties, including four fatalities and 47 serious injuries. However, authorities note that non‑fatal crash data for 2025 and 2026 is still incomplete, as coding for injury crashes lags by several months. Only fatal crashes are currently available for those years.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said every driver has a role in reducing road trauma.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we all have a part to play in preventing serious injuries and deaths on our roads. We can all do our bit , staying under the speed limit, driving to the conditions, wearing seatbelts correctly, avoiding fatigue, never using a mobile phone while driving, and never driving affected by drugs or alcohol.”
Speeding remains the leading contributor to road trauma in NSW. The NSW Government is expanding camera enforcement, trialling average‑speed cameras for light vehicles, reviewing speed zones, and delivering public education campaigns in partnership with NSW Police.
Nelson Bay Road carries more than 25,000 vehicles per day, and even more during holiday periods. Major upgrades are underway, with the Australian and NSW governments jointly investing $275 million to improve safety and traffic flow.
Authorities are urging drivers to slow down, stay alert, and take extra care as investigations into the crash continue.
