Success for Medowie 7yo in state mountain bike series

YOUNG Medowie rider Leo S. is proving age is no barrier when it comes to mountain biking success, after an impressive performance at one of the state’s biggest school competitions.

Earlier this term, students from Medowie Christian School travelled to Kempsey to compete in Round 1 of the 2026 NSW School Mountain Bike Series, hosted by the Macleay Valley Mountain Bike Riders at the Kalateenee Trails.

The event attracted competitors from more than 40 schools across NSW, with riders competing in divisions from Under 7s through to Under 19.

The series combined Olympic-style cross country (XCO) racing with Funduro, a beginner-friendly gravity enduro event designed to encourage participation while still testing riders’ skills and confidence on the trails.

Leo was among the standout performers in the highly competitive Under 7 boys division, which featured riders from more than seven schools.

He delivered an outstanding effort across both disciplines, securing third place in the Funduro downhill event after racing across four different tracks.

He also narrowly missed the podium in the cross country race, finishing fourth after completing two laps of the course in a time of 31 minutes and 27 seconds.

The young rider said the event was about more than just results.

“I also made a great new friend from other schools who we can ride with all season,” he said.

The Kalateenee MTB Trails offered a mix of flowing single track, technical features and challenging terrain, with courses adjusted to suit each age group and skill level.

Leo’s strong performance has put him among the promising young riders to watch as the NSW School Mountain Bike Series continues.
