ONE Mile Headland will again be the focus of a community effort to remove invasive weeds and restore native bushland later this month.
Friends of Tomaree National Park will hold its next community regeneration morning on Saturday 26 September, building on work already done around the headland.
Friends of Tomaree National Park Coordinator Sue Olsson said the difference was starting to show.
“The area is being transformed,” Ms Olsson said.
“By clearing out dense walls of bitou bush and lantana, we are providing vistas into the bush and out to sea.
“Best of all, we are starting to see the very first signs of natural bush regeneration.”
The group has been working through areas of bitou bush and lantana around One Mile Headland, with the first signs of native plants returning in some of the cleared sections.
This time the plan is to work further east along the Tomaree Coastal Walk from One Mile Beach, hopefully reaching the first track junction.
It has been 12 months since the last community event, so volunteers will also return to previously cleared areas to remove new seedlings and regrowth.
“We are winning the battle against the seed bank, but consistency is key,” Ms Olsson said.
There is a slightly different side to the day too, with members of the climbing community getting involved.
The Australian Climbing Association NSW and Pulse Climbing are supporting the event, with experienced climbers working on some of the harder-to-reach areas around the rocks.
Other volunteers will work down from the track, continuing the approach used last year when the two groups eventually met in the middle.
For those who have never tried bush regeneration before, Ms Olsson said no experience or knowledge of plants was needed, just a desire to improve our environment.
“Come along! We are a welcoming, friendly group,” she said.
The Coastal Forest Regen at One Mile Headland community event will be held on Saturday 26 September from 8.15am to 11.15am, with regeneration work starting at 8.30am, followed by morning tea.
