Why more Medowie locals are joining this friendship club

THE Combined Probus Club of Medowie is quietly building something many retirees seek but don’t always find: genuine connection.

Meeting on the third Wednesday of each month at Medowie Hall from 10am, the club offers more than a calendar of events.

It provides a consistent space for friendship, fellowship and shared experiences among locals enjoying their retirement years.

Part of the broader Probus network, which operates across Australia and promotes active, social retirement, the Medowie club reflects these values at a grassroots level.

Probus clubs are non-profit and exist purely for the benefit of their members.

“We meet as a friendship club,” member Diann Colman explained.
“We are not allowed to make a profit, but when funds permit, we subsidise our group outings.”

Each monthly meeting includes a guest speaker, followed by a relaxed morning tea where members and visitors can connect.

Beyond the hall, the club organises at least one outing each month, often gathering for lunch at local venues or exploring nearby destinations together.

For many, it’s these shared moments that matter most.

“Many of us have made lifelong friendships,” Diann said, highlighting the strong sense of belonging that has developed within the group.

A welcoming culture is central to the club’s identity.

Members make a point of greeting newcomers, ensuring guests feel comfortable from the moment they arrive.

As the club looks ahead, its focus is clear, to grow its membership and expand its activities while maintaining its close-knit feel.

Success, the Committee believes, would be “a large group of retired people enjoying activities and social gatherings as well as companionship with other locals”.

New members are always welcome to attend and experience Medowie Probus for themselves.
