NSW Government releases $4.6 million Tomaree Lodge Masterplan

THE NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) has released the $4.6 million masterplan for Tomaree Lodge, showcasing how it will be transformed in the coming two years into an accessible, sustainable location for everyone to enjoy.

“We see this as a once in a lifetime opportunity to develop something that future generations will thank us for,” said Kathy Barnes, Chair of Tomaree Cultural Development Group.

The Tomaree Lodge Masterplan, developed by SHAC Architects, follows the principle of reusing and improving pre-existing spaces rather than adding new buildings.

“The delivery plan focuses on the fundamentals – making the site safe, conserving heritage, upgrading ageing infrastructure and improving amenities – so Tomaree Lodge can be progressively opened up for community use,” said DCJ Secretary Michael Tidball.

Tomaree Lodge will be organised in eight precincts, each with a specific focus.

Accessibility is key in this new vision for the area, with better pedestrian and bike access, new signage, and upgrades to amenities and lighting.

Highlights include a new town square, a tourist hub, parks, playgrounds, and places to gather, learn, perform, and celebrate.

The plan also mentions the future possibility of reopening the ocean baths, as well as turning the Fisheries into a central, educational location.

The utmost importance has been placed on recognising the rich and layered history of Tomaree Lodge, with its deep cultural significance as Worimi Country, as well as its European heritage.

To this end, the location will be explored as a Site of Conscience, honoring and remembering the people with intellectual disabilities who were forcefully institutionalised here.

“The Worimi have had a connection with this place for thousands of years, we’ve got a remarkable war history, and we’ve got the stories of people with disability who were forced to call this place home,” said Kate Washington MP.

Ms Washington also vowed to ensure that the past was acknowledged, remembered and respected.
