Medowie Marauders topple Singleton to advance to Hunter Suburban Rugby Patrons Shield decider

MEDOWIE Marauders’ father-son duo of Jack and Dwayne Fleming are set to etch their names in the Hunter Suburban Rugby record books.

The pair are poised for premiership honours in the B Grade Patrons Shield after helping the Medowie club advance to the trophy decider with a 13-10 triumph over Singleton Bulls in last Saturday’s qualifying final at Newcastle’s No 2 Sportsground.

Years of backyard passes, sideline support and a shared passion for rugby have led to the Fleming family athletes running out together in the same Marauders colours this season.

Both have played key roles in Medowie’s 2026 minor title success with elusive winger Jack and flanker Dwayne turning in strong performances during the preliminary rounds.

Superbly led by tearaway forwards Simi Asomua and Eric Tolhurst, the Marauders are the first team into the Patrons Shield Grand Final after taming the Bulls in a torrid tussle.

The Medowie forward pack laid the foundations for a hard-fought victory with Asomua, Tolhurst, hooker Jake Lightbody, props Samuel Holbert  and Mitchell Goodman, second rower Steven Smith, flanker James Foster and number eight Carl Newson providing plenty of go-forward in a revved-up engine-room.
They were ably supported by classy halves Dan Murphy and Jayden Newson, dashing fullback Jacob Montgomery, experienced wingers Jack Fleming and Brody Morley and crack centres in Byron Lutelu and player-coach Hayden Thompson.

Adding plenty of depth and power was the Marauders’ interchange bench featuring the likes of Luke Hogarth, Daniel Collins, Mitch Powell, Jonathon Abel, Dwayne Fleming, Alex Holbert, Adam Beehag, Ned Twelvetree, Harley Stevenson and Oliver Stokes.

Singleton now face a tough preliminary final clash with Easts this Saturday at Newcastle’s No 2 Sportsground at 4.30pm for the chance to advance to the title decider.

The Easts club proved too strong for the Pokolbin Reds in their elimination final showdown last weekend – posting five tries in a 32-20 victory.

Flanker Tyson Wilcox grabbed a try double for the winners with number eight Mason Sejovic, second rower Nicolas Conicella-Suba and fullback Carlton Bernays also nabbing five pointers.

Easts centres Tallis Filipo and Tyran Duffield each potted conversions with the versatile Filipo also booting a penalty goal in a high scoring tussle.
