AS one of the first sights that greets visitors coming to Raymond Terrace, Bettles Park is a popular stopping point for drivers and a gateway into the town.
On 18 June, a new visitor sign highlighting local experiences, attractions, businesses, playgrounds, and scenic drives was unveiled in the park.
Funded by the Australian Government’s Stronger Communities Programme, the sign was born from a collaboration between local council, schools, and community stakeholders.
Local schoolchildren were encouraged to submit artwork and quotes highlighting what they loved about Raymond Terrace.
These will be now displayed to visitors for years to come.
“Raymond Terrace is a great place to visit and invest, and this project helps showcase everything our town has to offer,” Mayor Leah Anderson said.
During the opening event, the attending kids got to join a workshop, in collaboration with Up&Up, to decide together how a nearby bus stop should be decorated.
They were also asked to give feedback about Raymond Terrace as part of a strategy to build active engagement and a sense of belonging in the new generations.
“What might seem like a simple project at first glance is actually part of something much bigger happening here in Raymond Terrace,” said Port Stephens councillor Giacomo Arnott.
“What I picked up on today, looking at this great sign, is how much love there is for where we live, each other, and the things we do together,” said Federal Member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson MP.
