PORT Stephens Power AFL mens team are the big improvers in this year’s Hunter Central Coast Seniors Black Diamond Plate competition.
After chalking up impressive victories against the Muswellbrook Cats (116-35) and Killarney Vale Bombers (90-0) in the opening two rounds of the Shield series, the Power earned a quick promotion to the Plate division.
They booted 13 goals in a 93-42 triumph over The Entrance-Bateau Bay before tasting defeat against the second ranked Singleton Roosters (83-28) and well-drilled Cardiff Hawks (108-88) at Ferodale Oval.
Port Stephens coach Tony Merritt told News Of The Area that his youthful squad were “up for the challenge” in the strong Plate division.
“The team has improved with each outing and shown plenty of grit and courage against more seasoned opponents,” Merritt reflected.
“Our boys were resilient in a 20-point loss to sixth-placed Cardiff and pushed them all the way in a tight contest.”.
Experienced rover and skipper Reegan Connors continues to inspire team mates with all-action displays and his trusty boot – posting six goals in the win over the Cats.
Other players to impress include forward Saxon Curran, winger Ayden Murray, vice captains Jay Jeffery and Joel Chapman, on-baller Ben Mills, Ashley Luke, Rohan Williams, Ben Hopwood, Noah McKimm, Brock Tye, Ethan Wood, Seth Fowler and Adam Fiene.
Port Stephens face a tough assignment this Saturday, 13 June, when they host undefeated competition leaders Newcastle City at Ferodale Oval from 12 noon.
